Fried Cheese Wontons

I like this recipe as it shows another use for wonton wrappers. This probably isn’t the healthiest recipe in the world, but it sure looks tasty.

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

1 package of wontons, gyoza skins, or mandoo wrappers

1 8-ounce block of sharp cheddar cheese

water as needed

4 cups canola or vegetable oil

Instructions

· Cut the cheddar into 1/2 -inch square pieces.

· Wrap each piece in a gyoza skin to make a little package. Keep some water in a small bowl and run a wet finger around the outside edge of the skin to make the edges stick when you wrap it. Put a little water on the final edges as you wrap it around to really seal it.

· Heat 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a pan over high heat, but not the highest setting. Once it feels very hot, place the wontons in the oil and fry until golden. Flip once (about 2 minutes each side). The trick is to fry it hot enough that the wonton fries up quickly, but not too cool that the cheese melts out from cooking too long. The cheese will melt out if you leave it in the oil for too long.

· Drain on a plate lined with paper towels and serve while warm.
